Custom fields let you capture the details that matter to your business right on your contacts and accounts — things the built-in fields don't cover. Adding one takes just a few clicks from the Custom Fields settings. This guide shows you how.
How to create a custom field in Cornerspot
Creating a custom field is an admin action. You define a label, a key, the records it applies to, and the type of value it stores. A few of those choices are locked once the field exists, so it's worth choosing them carefully.
1. Open the Custom Fields page
From your Account Settings, open the Custom Fields tile (at /dashboard/settings/custom-fields). This lists the fields shown on your contacts and accounts, with a New Field button in the top-right corner.

2. Click “New Field”
Select New Field to open the field panel. It slides in from the right so you never lose your place in the list.

3. Enter a Field label and Field key
Type a Field label — the friendly name people see on records. Cornerspot fills in a matching Field key for you (lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores). The key is the field's permanent identifier and cannot be changed later, so adjust it now if you need to.

4. Choose who it applies to
Use Applies to to pick whether the field lives on Contacts or Accounts. Fields for contacts and accounts are separate, and this choice is locked once the field exists.

5. Pick a Field type
Choose a Field type that matches the value you'll store — for example Text, Number, Date, or Single Select. Like the entity type, the field type is locked after creation, so choose the one that fits.

6. Set options, then create the field
Optionally turn on Required field so records can't be saved without a value, or open Advanced to set a Default value pre-filled on new records. When everything looks right, click Create Field.

7. Your field is ready
The new field appears in your Custom Fields list and starts showing on the records it applies to right away.

Good to know about custom fields
- Contacts and accounts are separate: A field you create for contacts won't appear on accounts, and the other way around — choose Applies to accordingly.
- Some choices are permanent: The Field key, the entity type, and the Field type are locked once the field exists, so choose them carefully up front.
- Required and default values: Use Required field to make a value mandatory, and the Advanced section's Default value to pre-fill new records.
- Retire instead of delete: When a field is no longer needed you can archive it so it stops appearing on records, and restore it later from the Archived view.
Tips for designing custom fields
- Pick a clear, human label — it's what your team sees on every record.
- Choose the most specific field type you can (a Date rather than Text, a Single Select rather than free text) so your data stays clean.
- Only mark a field Required when every record truly needs it, so you don't block people from saving.
